But when Victor returns to Earth, claiming another planet's atmosphere made him sick - instead of admitting that he could not handle the rejection after his return - he seeks revenge on Reed, sabotaging his college project by allowing radiation into the laboratory. Reed's experiments with gamma rays cause him to gain strange powers. Ben is affected just as much, but without the knowledge of Reed's experiments. While the two of them are experimenting with their newfound power, they accidentally create a creature that can destroy anything it touches. The creature is cornered by the Fantastic Four, but unleashes his destructive force on the city of New York before they can stop him. The people of New York begin to turn against Victor when his actions result in an increase in crime rates. The Fantastic Four attempt to make Victor return home to his planet, but instead he steals a ship and declares that he is going to conquer the Earth. The FF pursue him into space, but while the other members are fighting Victor's spaceship, Ben drops a shard of metal onto his head. This gives Victor a headache and he returns home. To prove himself worthy of Reed's friendship again, Ben joins the Fantastic Four, sharing his knowledge from the Shi'ar to help them do better research on their powers. Despite working well with Ben, Reed still does not forgive him for creating the creature in the first place.
